Nature
enjoyed hiding little treasures everywhere in Valdera. The
green woody hills of Palaia, the "calanchi" (ravines), the
vineyard-designed valleys between Terricciola and Peccioli,
the intense colours of Lajatico, where the sight sweeps towards
Volterra. Chianni, laid in oak and chestnut woods, and the
rounded hills spreading from Lari to the sea.
The
glow of colours and the suggestion of landscape at sunset
are, in every season, the most moving spectacle of Valdera.
The sea is rather close, giving Valdera a mild climate even
in the winter. Water is a constant presence under different
forms: rivers, streams, small lakes and ponds, and it is an
essential reference for a rich and varied fauna. Many species
of birds love stopping here during their passage.
The
woods of holm-oak and chestnut give shelter to different hoofed
animals and, in the right season, after the rain, they become
beautiful places to go mushrooming. In the uncoltivated meadows
a great variety of orchids can be found, prey of coloured
butterflies. And everywhere the characteristic design of cypresses,
distinctive sign of the genuine Tuscan countryside.
