1294135734The Museum of Sacred Art was inaugurated in 2009 upon a decision of the Municipal Administration, of the Parish of San Verano and with the collaboration of the B.A.P.S.A.E. Superintendency and of the Peccioliper Foundation. The Museum is housed within the Romanic church of San Verano within the Chapel of the Assunta, built starting from 1580 to host the homonymous Compagnia. In 2006 the building underwent extensive restoration work on the wooden ceiling, the doors, choir and floors which has turned the Chapel into the perfect site for the preservation of works from the Peccioli churches. Inside the Museum, after a long period during which they were not accessible to the public, the Madonna with Baby can be admired dating back to the first half of the XII century and attributed to Enrico di Tedice “Delle Grazie” owing to the special devotion it has always received from the territory, as well as the dossal with San Nicholas and histories of his life dating back to the third quarter of the 13th century attributed to Michele di Baldovino. This latter table, donated in 1881 by Giuseppe Toscanelli, has an inscription on the back where Saint Nicholas is indicated as “San Verano abbot, patron of Peccioli”. This misunderstanding had continued up to our time and was due to the strong resemblance to another dossal depicting San Verano and stories of his life. This latter dossal is now preserved in the Museum of Brera and is thought to have been originally located in the church of Peccioli from which it was purloined during the course of the 19th century. Also preserved inside the Museum are a wooden crucifix dating back to the fourth decade of the 14th century and related to the Sienese sculpture by Giovanni Pisano. A Holy Conversation by Neri di Bicci of 1463; an Assumption with Angels and Saints by Giovanni Bilivert dated 1628. Noteworthy is the painting depicting Saint Peter and attributed to Giovanni Battista Piazzetta. Also exhibited at the museum are several works of goldsmith’s art among which the goblet dating back to the 15th century and attributed to a Sienese goldsmith’s workshop close to Sano di Pietro.
